The soldier went to war and got saved by his button on his jacket because a piece of shell hit his button and flew off instead of hitting the soldier.

2. The soldier polished the button and took it to parades every year and then put it back in the cupboard for another year of waiting.

The years passed and the jacket stayed in the cupboard. Ella found the jacket and showed her mum. Then Ella snipped off the buttons and polished them. Once they were polished she sewed them onto a piece of red ribbon.

ANZAC Day.

Boom! Bang! Bombs were exploding. Wounded soldiers and tears filled Gallipoli. Trenches bombs and shooting. Many soldiers killed by gas. What a horrible site!

So many soldiers fought in the war. Blood everywhere.

Brown squishy mud carpeted the battlefield. But… There was one thing that was filled with colour, it was a poppy. It had bloomed through the slimy sticky mud and had made a tiny speck of colour and hope.

Then the war ended.

Dead soldiers were buried in a field while other soldiers went home. What no one knew was that a few days later, poppies grew. Hope and colour filled the fields.

Now they call it Flanders fields.
